Why do we use Time Distribution Option in the Update Rule in SAP BW Classic?

In SAP BW Classic, the time distribution option in the update rule is use to distribute the key figure values from various source records across various multiple time periods in the target.

When we have to handle the data that spans over various time intervals, or allocate the values to specific time buckets in data targets, then we can use this concept of time distribution option.

Why using Time Distribution Option is a good choice:

  • Using time distribution option, we can summarized the values for a longer time period, by splitting the source record value into smaller and more granular time periods.
  • Aligning the data with finer granularity requirements to fulfil the reporting needs.
  • To allocate the planned values evenly across the given time periods, thus helping in planning and budgeting scenario.
  • The need for custom ABAP coding is reduced as a built-in mechanism is being provided to distribute the data over multiple time dimensions.

There are three major kind of time distribution options which includes:

Pro Rated Distribution – where the values are evenly distributed across the target periods.

Time Dependent Distribution – where the distribution happen based on pre-defined factors including working days etc.

No Distribution – when the value is being retained as-in from the original time-period without any kind of splitting.

Benefits of using this concept:

  • The custom logic which involved time-based data allocation becomes easier.
  • Increasing the flexibility of reporting by enabling the granularity adjustments.
  • All the manual efforts are being transformed on the basis of time-based data.

The Time Distribution Option is a powerful feature for ensuring that time-based data is accurately transformed and aligned with business reporting needs.
