Integration with SAP ECC and SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC)

Scenario

A company is still running SAP ECC for:

  • Finance (FI/CO)
  • Sales & Distribution (SD)
  • Materials Management (MM)

They are not yet migrated to S/4HANA but want:

  • Cloud analytics
  • Harmonized KPIs
  • AI-driven insights
  • Modern data platform

🧱 How ECC Integrates with SAP BDC

Since ECC is a legacy ERP, integration is slightly different compared to S/4.

🔹 1️⃣ Data Extraction Methods

BDC can integrate with ECC using:

✅ ODP (Operational Data Provisioning)

  • Uses standard ECC extractors
  • Recommended modern approach

✅ SLT (SAP Landscape Transformation)

  • Real-time table replication
  • Good for near real-time reporting

✅ BW Bridge Approach

  • Reuse existing BW extractors
  • Lower redevelopment effort

👉 Direct CDS-based extraction (like S/4) is limited in ECC.

🔹 2️⃣ Data Ingestion into BDC

ECC tables such as:

  • BKPF (Accounting document header)
  • BSEG (Line items)
  • VBAK (Sales header)
  • MARA (Material master)

Are ingested into BDC’s managed data foundation.

🔹 3️⃣ Harmonization & Semantic Layer

Since ECC does not have Universal Journal like S/4:

  • More transformation logic may be required
  • Finance tables may need consolidation
  • Custom mappings are often needed

BDC applies:

  • Standardized business entities
  • Harmonized KPIs
  • Currency & unit conversions

🔹 4️⃣ Analytical Consumption

Data is exposed to:

  • SAP Analytics Cloud
  • External BI tools
  • Predictive models

🏗️ Architecture Flow

SAP ECC ↓ ODP / SLT / BW Bridge ↓ Data Replication ↓ BDC Data Foundation ↓ Business Semantics & KPI Harmonization ↓ SAC / AI Consumption

⚠️ Key Differences: ECC vs S/4 Integration

ECCS/4HANA
No Universal JournalHas ACDOCA
Extractor-basedCDS-based
More custom logicMore standardized
Higher transformation effortCleaner integration

🎯 Interview-Ready Answer (Short)

SAP Business Data Cloud integrates with SAP ECC using ODP, SLT, or BW Bridge approaches to extract legacy ERP data. Since ECC lacks native CDS views and Universal Journal, additional transformation and harmonization are required before exposing data through the semantic layer for analytics.
