Q&A – 1 of 15 – SAP BWHANA Real Time Scenario Based Questions – Interview Prep

Ques:

There is a requirement where the transactional data from SAP ECC to SAP BW to be done.

The data volume of this loading is too high & there are various time constraints.

What are the extraction method options are there: full, delta, or real-time data extraction?

How will you going to configure it?

Ans:

When we have to deal with a high volume of data, where the transactional data has to be extracted from SAP ECC to SAP BW, and when the time constraint is there, choosing the right extraction method is very important for performance and accuracy.

The extraction method depends on both the amount of data volume as well as how quickly the data has to be loaded into SAP BW.

We can choose from below extraction methods:

A. Full Extraction:

When you have to reload all the data from scratch. Used for initial loads but it will cause performance issues when dealing with large transactional datasets. It can be a time-consuming extraction.

We can use a standard extractor in SAP ECC mainly or can create custom data sources for the same.

B. Delta Extraction:

When we have to extract only the changes or the new or modified records since the last extraction happens, then we can use the concept of delta extraction.

It can be good for extracting incremental changes. It is good for lower data volume and more efficient when the changed data has to be extracted after the initial load.

C. Real-Time Data Extraction

Good when the business requires near real-time data extraction to SAP BW as soon as it changes in SAP ECC. Data is updated as soon as it is created or modified in SAP ECC, making it good for real-time sensitive reporting.

It ensures most current data is being loaded. We have to make sure the correct setup for SAP BW4 HANA or SLT is there, to handle real-time data transfer.

How can we configure the Real Time Data Extraction or Delta Extraction:

For Delta Extraction:

– Initial Full Load: Load all necessary historical data via initial full load.

– Delta Mechanism Setup: Enabling the change pointer functionality in SAP ECC to detect the changes. Then, Set up the delta queue in SAP ECC to ensure only changed records are pushed to the BW system. Also, enable Timestamp or Log-based delta setup.

It is important to initialize the correct delta to ensure the correct alignment of the source data to BW data. Schedule the correct delta loads based on the business requirements.

If we have a high volume of data and time constraints, then recommending the delta extractions will be a primary option. Also, delta extractions can be a good option if: data is largely transactional, frequent updates are required, and performance overhead with full extractions.

If real-time data processing is critical (for example, for near-live reporting or real-time analytics), then Real-Time Data Extraction using SLT or ODP would be the best option, but it requires careful system configuration and monitoring to ensure stable performance.
