Q&A – 14 of 15 – SAP BWHANA Real Time Scenario Based Questions – Interview Prep

Ques:

There is a requirement where business needs real-time data processing capabilities.

What are the options you have to achieve near real-time data processing in SAP BW HANA?

Are you going to use Smart Data Access, Smart Data Integration, or Real Time Enabled data sources?

Ans:

We can make a choice between SDA, SDI, and Real-Time Enabled data sources, as per our business requirement and how much data needs to be processed in real-time.

  1. ODP – Real-time enabled data sources:

Best for real-time extraction through SAP Systems. It leverages the ODP framework to enable real-time data extraction from operational systems to SAP BW.

This framework allows continuous streaming of data from source systems to SAP BW.

Data is extracted from SAP systems and only new or changed data is being captured & sent to BW.

A delta queue is being used for capturing these changes in data and transferring them in near real-time.

Primarily suitable for SAP-native systems. Non-SAP sources might require additional integration layers.

2. Smart Data Access (SDA):

This is best for virtualized access to external data sets. Here, we don’t need to replicate the data into SAP BW.

This means the data can be queried in real time without being physically stored in SAP BW. It uses the concept of virtual tables.

This is ideal for situations where data volume is too large or too dynamic to load into SAP BW, or when you want to keep the data source in place (e.g., real-time external systems).

3. Smart Data Integration (SDI)

Best for real-time data replication and transformation, from external data sources to SAP BW.

It is majorly used when we have to extract, transform, and load the data from various heterogeneous sources to near real-time.

It offers a real-time integration layer between SAP BW and external data sources, applying transformations as needed during the load.

Can handle both SAP and Non SAP system:

What is the main difference between the three of them?

In SDA, no data replication is required and data stays at external systems by virtual access whereas in SDI, real-time data replication is thereby DTP via optional transformations. For ODP sources, data replication happens but on the basis of the delta mechanism by direct data extraction method.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your source systems, the data volume, the frequency of updates, and your need for data transformation.
