To reduce the aging of data in SAP BW on the HANA system, we can do the archiving of old data into a cold storage tier, while making sure that the data is still accessible as and when needed through a variety of techniques and approaches.
- DTO – Data Tiering Optimization
The best practice is to use DTO – Data Tiering for managing the data where old or less frequently used data will be moved to cold storage and can be accessed as and when needed. This is the most common way of managing data aging in SAP BW HANA.
In SAP BW, we can mark the data as ‘cold’ based on age or business logic, and move it to a lower-cost storage tier.
- NLS – Near Line Storage
NLS acts as a bridge between the hot and cold systems. It lets you store the historical or less frequently used data into a less inexpensive storage medium, but also remain accessible as and when the reporting is required.
It lets you allow the impact on the performance to be reduced while keeping the data access for querying. NLS is used mainly for larger datasets which are not more often used.
There can be other tiering techniques as well which include Cloud-based archiving and dynamic tiering in SAP BW HANA or SAP ILM techniques for tiering purposes.
